The Most Important Thing to Teach Your dog

IF YOU ONLY EVER TEACH YOUR DOG ONE THING,
TEACH HIM TO SIT
100% of the time, at the first command, in a normal tone of voice
Most problems would then be solved e.g:
Jumping up
Lunging at other dogs
Answering the door

Teach your puppy to sit in lots of situations. Re-teach your older dog if you've let him get into bad habits.
It needs to be practiced every day throught his life. It is no good expecting him to sit when his favourite person comes to the door if you haven't let him practice sitting at various levels of excitement.
Examples:
When you put his food down
When you put the lead on
Going into the garden
Going out of the door for a walk
At the kerb
Before getting out of the car
When anyone enters the house

It may seem a controlling thing, but you are teaching him self control and, as time goes by, neither of you will notice it because it will be the norm. When he is really excited, sitting when he is told will be automatic, but only if you practice it each day.
